Featured Article: Conquering Revenge Bedtime Procrastination

Revenge bedtime procrastination is when you stay up late doing the things you want to do but don’t have time to do during the day. A coworker of mine was describing it to me the other day, and explaining how it was getting in the way of getting enough rest.

I totally understand. I used to do it myself. I would get so caught up in work and family and household tasks that I never felt I had down time. I would be doing things right up until I fell into bed, and then grab a book because that was “me” time.

I found that regularly scheduling time to read did away with the need to do revenge bedtime procrastination. I find 15-30 minutes a day, usually during my lunch break, when I allow myself to read. It doesn’t really pull away from the rest of the things in my life, and I feel like I get to “indulge” in something I enjoy very much. Since implementing this, I have found it much easier to get to bed on time.

Key takeaway: Conquer revenge bedtime procrastination by finding little blocks of time daily to do the things you would have done instead of sleeping.

From My Experience

The Value of Data Tracking

Full disclosure - I am a data nerd. I track things because I like to track them. In 2025 I started tracking things like sleep quality, medicine side effects and fatigue against my healthy living habits and activity level.

My doctor was recently concerned about the level of headaches I have been having. Thanks to the tracker I was able to show her the correlation between the headaches and when I take a certain medication. Turns out the headaches are not a worrisome symptom, but a less common but known side effect.

A new chapter?

LauraEarnest.com Deliberate Living Made Simpler. VIEW IN BROWSER A New Chapter? One of the things I have been working on is cleaning out my library. It started with the physical books in my to-be-read pile, where I went through books and got really honest about whether or not I was going to read them. From there I moved onto my Kindle. I look on my Kindle books much as I would paper books. If I am not going to read it again, I am going to get rid of it. The only down side is that no one gets...

The To Be Read Pile

Cleaning Up The (Dreaded) To Be Read Pile My daughter worked at a national bookstore chain for the last year. She used her staff discount liberally - and frequently. I was in her room the other night and she proudly showed me a small basket. “This is my ‘to be read’ pile.” I looked her dead in the eyes and said “Amateur.” And while I was joking around with her, my mind went to the other side of the house and the feet of physical books that are in my pile…and the books that are languishing on...

What's In My CarryBag

What’s In My Carry Bag This article was inspired by a recent article from Chris Bailey. I read the article, and decided to pare my carry bag way down, and then share the results. I was headed down a frightening path. I’ve always carried stuff with me. Lots of stuff. Kind people tell me I’m just prepared for things (Be Prepared is the Girl Scout Motto). Unkind people, well, it’s unkind. But I could see that I was heading to being one of those old women who has a purse the size of a steamer...
